Jasmin Espinosa January 28, 2026

BROWNSVILLE – Voter registration for the March primary elections closes on Monday, giving those unregistered a few more days before they lose their opportunity to choose their party candidate for the November elections.

The last day to register to vote for the March primary elections is Feb. 2.

According to votetexas.gov, the following are required to register:

-Be a United States citizen and resident of the county where application was submitted

-Must be at least 17 years and 10 months old on the date the voter registration application is submitted– and 18 years old on Election Day.

-Individuals cannot be a convicted felon (but may be eligible to vote if sentence, probation and parole is

complete.

-Have not been declared by a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be either totally mentally or partially mentally incapacitated without the right to vote.

According to the Federal Voting Assistance Program (FAVP), primary elections select party candidates for the general election in November.

Elections Administrator Remi Garza said Cameron County will have nineteen polling locations from Feb. 17 through the 27.

Voters may cast a ballot on any polling location in their county during early voting.

However, on Election Day in March, Cameron County voters will have designated polling locations based on their party affiliation.

“On Election Day, you do have to go to polling locations that are specific for democrats and polling locations that are specific for republicans,” Garza said. “A lot of them are in the same location, they’ll be at the same building, but they might be in separate rooms. So, the democrats have a lot more polling locations than the republicans do. Almost 20 additional, polling location so there are 27 or 28 locations that don’t have both parties at them.”

Hilda Salinas, Hidalgo elections administrator, said the county will have thirty-one polling locations during early voting and 67 on Election Day.

“And they’ll all be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. except for Sunday, polling locations will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.,” Salinas said.
