Spring 2026 semester recap – KVAQ Sports

Jasmin Espinosa May 7, 2026

BROWNSVILLE – So far, three UTRGV athletic teams have won a Southland Conference Championship in the spring semester.

While some teams such as women’s swimming and diving have already wrapped up their seasons, other teams such as baseball, golf, tennis, and track & field, will continue their seasons into May or June.

Let’s take a look at how these seasons have gone so far and how some of them have already concluded.

Baseball:

Looking at UTRGV Baseball, the Vaqueros have one more three-game series before the team heads off to its Southland Conference Tournament, starting on May 14.

The three-games series will be against Tarleton State University, starting Friday.

The team also had a game against Abilene Christian University on Tuesday, ending in a 13-7 win.

As of now, the Vaqueros have an overall record of 25-25.

Men’s and Women’s Golf:

Rolling down the fairway, the UTRGV Women’s Golf team will play in the NCAA regional at the Seminole Legacy Golf Club in Tallahassee, Florida from May 11 to May 13.

The team was one of three who won a Southland Conference Championship this semester so far.

Under the guidance of Puthia Khuanrudee, the team’s associate head coach, and Houston Moore, director of golf, the Vaqueros earned its second win in the conference mid-April.

According to UTRGV athletics, the women’s golf team finished with a program record of a three-round scoring of 868, marking the second lowest total score in the Southland Conference Championship history.

On the other side of the green, UTRGV Men’s Golf looks toward its NCAA regionals later this month starting on May 18.

The program secured its first-ever Southland Conference Championship at the Comanche Trace last month.

According to UTRGV athletics, men’s golf earned the program’s first-ever Southland Conference Championship with an even par of 288.

Men and Women’s Track and field:

The UTRGV Men’s and Women’s Track and Field teams are set to travel north to Nacogdoches as they compete in their Southland Conference Outdoor Championships. The event will go on from May 14 through May 16.

The women’s track and field team had previously won its Southland Conference Indoor Championships in February. The team had 128 points, placing 1-of-12.

In late April, La’zariah Bethany, a junior jumper, won the women’s triple jump event at the Cameron Burrell Invitational in Houston, obtaining the fifth best score in program history of twelve point fifty-two meters.

Men’s track and field placed 4-of-12 in its Southland Conference Indoor Championships in February, with 61 points total.

Men’s and Women’s Tennis:

Racking up their season, the UTRGV women’s tennis team ended with a loss against Northwestern State University 4-1. This marked the end of the team’s Southland Conference tournament.

The Vaqueros finished their spring season with an overall score of 5-16 in comparison to last year’s score where the team finished 9-8.

On the other side of the court, UTRGV Men’s Tennis fell with a score of 4-1 against the University of New Orleans, ending the southland conference tournament with an overall score of 10-15, a step up from last year’s score of 7-17.
