EDINBURG – Balancing deadlines, classes and social life can be a full-time job, yet a few UTRGV students took a step further to create their own business while still studying.
Inspired by his brother, Julian Castillo, computer science senior, became co-owner of Castillo Botanicals and Crystals.
Castillo shared how owning a business has helped him develop better communication skills as an introverted individual.
“I consider myself an introvert so having to get used to talking to a lot of clients, thousands of people every month, you kind of just get used to it,” Castillo said.
When it comes to taking a step further and growing a small business, Krystal Valdez, social work major and owner of K-M Jewelry, aims to expand her market to give back to aspiring college entrepreneurs.
She said her main goal is to guide students in the future who are interested in starting their own business and might be lost in the process of management.
“I do want to have this organization, this company grow to a part where I can give back to young entrepreneurs in college creating loans, creating grants, for students,” Valdez said.
Both Castillo and Valdez encourage other students who are interested in creating their own business to take the opportunity and go for it.
