UTRGV Ranks in latest Washington Monthly

Felix Balderas September 15, 2022

The University was recently recognized as the second-best college in Texas by Washington Monthly’s annual national College Guide and Rankings This achievement comes after UTRGV implemented a new finance model that prioritizes getting the best possible education for the least amount of money.

“What Washington Monthly’s rankings confirm is the approach we have taken,” said UTRGV President Guy Bailey regarding minimizing the amount of debt students have when they finish college. “Our students are coming here and when they leave, they end up in a better position in their lives. What that means is that you have your family and your children and that means that your children will probably go to college.”

“ I’m very proud, I think that we have so many opportunities down here, all 3 of our campuses are expanding and I’m very proud” said Mariela Angeles, communication major, when asked about what this recognition means to her as a student.

UTRGV also ranked:

  • 45th nationally.
  • First in social mobility among Texas public universities.
  • First in Texas Public Universities for the performance of Pell Grant Students.
  • Fourth nationally for the performance of Pell Grant Students.
  •  First among Texas Public Universities for Net Price of Attendance.
  •  Second nationally for Net Price of Attendance.
  • Second among Southern Public Universities for ‘Best Bang for the Buck’.

“I think the university has to be the catalyst for making the Rio Grande Valley the best place in the state to live,” added Bailey. “[..] The best-educated place, the place with access to great healthcare, with a lot of economic opportunities,”

Ultimately, UTRGV continues to make a mark both nationally and state-wide.
