A UTRGV organization gives students creative freedom through fashion

Miguel Gonzalez April 25, 2025

EDINBURG – House of Fashion is a growing club that combines modeling, design, photography and cosmetology to help students express themselves artistically.

Ana Camacho, H.O.F senior vice president, said the club is a platform for students to practice their artistic skills.

She added, the club has no requirements to join.

“It’s a student organization but we like to think of it as a major in fashion here in UTRGV.” Camacho said. “It started in, I believe 2019, right before the pandemic hit. So, there was not a lot of members when it started up.”

Camacho said the organization hosts two shows every semester, one in Edinburg and one in Brownsville.

She said, during the semester they host photoshoots relating to the theme for promotional purposes.

“It’s basically like a mini fashion show in preparation for the big fashion show,” Camacho said.

Rebeca Santos, H.O.F cosmetologist, said her role as a makeup artist is to prepare the looks seen on stage and to make sure the models have their looks according to their designs.

“And then we gather all the looks, we create a lookbook, and that’s what we get like our guides or references for during the day of the show, so we know what to do,” Santos said.

Santos said there will be an art exhibit from April 28 to May 9 at the Charles and Dorothy Clark Gallery in the Liberal Arts Building South (ELABS) on the Edinburg campus.

Damien Cortez, H.O.F. model and designer, said that fashion is his preferred expression of art and that they are always looking for new members.

“Fashion is…I want to say everything, like, fashion is like the way you dress, the way you talk, the way you move, the way you walk, like fashion is really just putting how you feel out into the world,” Cortez said. “And everyone’s able to see that. And I think that’s beautiful. And that’s one of the reasons I love fashion so much.”

Camacho invites everyone to the show on April 28 at the Marbel Event Center in Edinburg.

The event will have a $10 entrance fee.
