UTRGV Student Media achieves historic “three-peat” at state convention

Jasmin Espinosa April 24, 2025

BROWNSVILLE – The UTRGV Student Media Department brought home the coveted Directors Cup for the fourth time in history and third in a row at the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association convention in early April.

Student Media previously won the Director Cup in 2019, 2023 and 2024.

The department won a total of 52 awards from the on-site and previously published competitions, earning placements in contests including Spanish Radio Announcing, Newspaper Design, Editorial Cartoon and Magazine Design among others.

Nicole Morris, Texas A&M University adviser and former TIPA President, said attending TIPA is an experience for students to confirm their passion for journalism.

“It reinforces that you are on the right path career wise, and that you are putting into practice what you’re learning in the classroom,” Morris said. “So, it certainly is a way to validate your skills.”

UTRGV competed against about 40 universities and colleges including Baylor University, Texas A&M University, and Texas State University to name a few.

TIPA 2026 is expected to be held March 19-21 in the Denton Embassy Suites.
