BROWNSVILLE – “We want everyone to go out, and have a great time, like that’s the ultimate goal,”
On Thursday, December 5, the city of Brownsville hosted its annual tree lighting event in Washington Park. The event included different activities and performances open to the public.
Special Events Coordinator for the City of Brownsville Parks & Recreation department Michelle Otero tells us how much planning goes into events like this.
“I start planning usually like in the middle of October, and the whole month of November, because the event is the beginning of December. It’s really just to give me more time to reach out to the different schools, and organizations, so that they can come out and be a part of the event,” said Otero.
While thanking faculty and maintenance, Otero tells us that 13,000 lights were needed just for this event.
“You know if it wasn’t for our maintenance guys, those lights would not be put up so beautifully and in a timely manner,” she continued.
“There’s a lot of vendors here, so food is awesome, I think it’s great,” said Juan, a Brownsville resident.
“We’ve been coming to this event for many years, we think it’s a wonderful event, they have so many activities, a lot of different vendors, so we always try to bring the kids out. We think it’s beautiful when they put the lights out. It’s one of the many wonderful things that they have here in Brownsville,” said Evett Aquinez, another Brownsville resident.
From pictures with Santa, a flame performer, food and artisan vendors, we can say this event had it all.
“We want to be able to spread the holiday cheer, and we want to give the community more things to do around town,” said Otero.
