BROWNSVILLE – Although SNAP may only receive partial funding in November, there is an alternative solution to place food on the table.
Alex Racelis, UTRGV’s agroecology program director, says crops such as kale, okra, squash and broccoli are simple to grow in the comfort of one’s own backyard.
He recommends individuals start with kale leaves as these can be planted throughout the year.
“The other things that that I think are very satisfying to grow are broccoli although they take up a lot of space, you can get a variety that continues to give you broccoli heads so that you can get 3 or 4 cuttings off of one broccoli plant,” Raceli said. “So those are probably the easiest ones to grow. But I think for the impatient grower, you might want to grow some radishes, which only take, 3 to 4 weeks or even some lettuce.”
According to the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, crops such as kohlrabi, broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage and cauliflower can be planted in November. Racelis said to learn more on how to grow plants and crops, visit the RGV Growers Guide Website.
