Edinburg- UTRGV kicked off their season on the pitch against Miami University. The Hurricanes stormed the Vaqueros by winning four to zero. However, the story of the night was a number much bigger than that. You The attendance records for UTRGV Men and Women’s soccer are slashed thanks to 1,080 fans showing up at UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex to see the game.
The following match saw UTRGV take on Alabama State. But the most intense battle wasn’t exactly between the Vaqueros and the Hornets. Instead, it was a battle between who could score the most goals on UTRGV.
Sophomore Emily Zapata put the first points on the board with not one but two goals in the First Half. Zapata led the team with 11 goals last season and made a good effort to repeat that this year.
But not if Sarah Bonney had to say anything. She blasted three goals simultaneously later in the First Half. In doing so, Bonney became the all-time leading scorer in program history by knocking in her 26th career goal. And Bonney is thrilled about the achievement.
“That was my goal for this semester, to break [Andreya Barrera’s] record and set a new one,” exclaimed Bonney. “I’m really excited I got to do this tonight,” continued Bonney.
The scoring wasn’t done there as Isabella Marinaro connected on her first career goal in the Second Half. In the end, UTRGV prevailed with a dominating 6-0 win.
UTRGV’s next game is against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the South Texas Showdown on August 30th.
