UTRGV Encourages Voter Registration Among Students

Andrea Flores September 28, 2023

As local and Texas elections approach, the Civic Engagement Alliance and Center for Student Involvement bring opportunities for students to make their voice heard through their National Voter Registration Day event.

The City of Edinburg will hold its Municipal General Elections on Nov. 7. The Constitutional Amendment and the Special Election for House District 2 will also be taking place.

As for local elections, incumbent David White and Gerardo “Gerry” Lozano are running for councilmember Place 3. Incumbent Johnny Garcia and challenger David Salazar are vying for Place 4; candidates for court judge are Hector Bustos Jr. and Armando Guerra.

As for the Constitutional Amendment Election, voters will decide the result of 14 proposed amendments to the Texas Constitution.

The UTRGV Civic Engagement Alliance and the Center for Student Involvement provided students an opportunity to register to vote or update their information before the Oct. 10 deadline.

Student Union Assistant Director Massiel Muñoz and Center for Student Involvement Program Coordinator Raul Leal took part in the National Voter Registration Day event and spoke about the importance of ensuring students have access to deadline information.

“That way, students are aware of the resources that they have available to themselves,” Leal said. “And so, we just want to ensure that students have access to all of the opportunities to vote on campus.”

Muñoz added every vote counts and that voting locally is just as important as the national level.

“What happens here in your county, that’s really important since that’s what we are, I think, most impacted by on a day-to-day basis,” she said.

Early voting begins Oct. 23 and ends Nov. 3. Students and residents can cast a ballot at the UTRGV Student Academic Center or the Edinburg Elections Annex building. For those still needing to register or update their information, visit utrgv.turbovote.org.
