EDINBURG– With multiple summer classes canceled many UTRGV students were affected by the decrease in availability, especially in the college of Liberal Arts.
“It’s never happened in over 20 years, so I wasn’t expecting it at all,” Communication Professor Kimberly Selber said, “I was really quite flabbergasted to be honest.”
Minimum enrollment for the college of Liberal Arts is currently 15 students per class, a missed requirement for some summer classes this term.
Dr. Selber said she doesn’t prefer to teach online but tried to make changes to accommodate students and encourage registration. She went as far as changing in-person classes to asynchronous. Even with the changes, students were not enrolling, causing classes to be canceled.
According to the UTRGV Division of Strategic Enrollment and Student Affairs, the enrollment for this summer term dropped drastically by 460 students from last year.
Schedule changes and delayed graduation dates were some of the effects of the cancellations.
Cancellations not only affect students but faculty as well. Selber said instructors’ salaries were also affected.
“At the end of the day, I wanted to take the course and for the university to not explain […] I feel like it’s a little miscommunication on part of the university and their faculty,” Political Science junior, Javier Cantu said, “and I would like for students to not only advocate but be loud […] it’s affecting all of the incoming students and also the ones going out of the university already.”
For assistance with registration, students can contact the department chair of their major, an advisor, or reach out to the Student Government Association at UTRGV.
