Low Attendance in Brownsville UREC

Monica Chavez August 17, 2023

UTRGV- University Recreation Director Kimberly Rottet gave us an estimate of students who use the UREC.

“Oh, you know seven to 10,000 students swiping their access into our Edinburg campus,” Rottet said. “We clearly don’t have quite as many of the students utilizing that same swipe access [Brownsville campus].”

While some students struggle to make time between class and work to visit the REC, other students make it a priority to include it in their schedule.

“Not as much as I want to, I definitely want to try to use it as much but between classes and work I don’t give myself enough time as I should,” Lia Cavazos, Political science major said.

“Preferably I try to work out five times out of the week, Monday through Friday to keep in shape,” Zayra Esquivel, a student employee of the Brownsville REC said.

Rottet mentioned that other reasons for students not using the Brownsville REC might be the drop in enrollment and that students are not aware is included in their tuition

“Part of our job is to educate folks and we actually get a few calls from people not necessarily recognizing they pay for a line item within their tuition.” Rottet said.

The division of strategic enrollment and student affairs reported a decline in enrollment for summer one and summer two this year. Summer one and summer two had 1,988 less students than last year.
