EDINBURG – UTRGV Volleyball tallied its first two home wins of the season and a loss after defeating the Northwestern State Demons 3-1 Thursday, the Texas A&M-Commerce Lions 3-0 Saturday and losing 3-2 to the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders Oct. 8.
The match against the Islanders was neck to neck throughout the five sets.
Todd Lowery, UTRGV Women’s Volleyball head coach, said the team needs to focus on its strengths.
“I mean, obviously Corpus is a tough team for us to play against, some things they do cause us problems,” Lowery said. “I think the thing for us is to go back to the things we are good at. […] I have to say Corpus did a good job with the blocking scheme, so well have to take a little bit better advantage of this weekend if teams choose to decide to do the same thing.”
Ilana De Assis, senior outside hitter, finished with 22 kills, 14 digs, 4 blocks and 2 aces. Isabella Costantini, sophomore setter, recorded a career-high 66 assists.
Leah Stolfus, Islander senior middle blocker, garnered 15 kills, 4 blocks, 2 assists and 1 ace, while Alex Hoglund, fellow graduate setter, had 54 assists and 11 digs.
UTRGV’s overall record is now 8-8 and 4-2 in conference.
The Vaqueros will have two conference rematches on the road against Northwestern State and Texas A&M Commerce.
The conference rematch against Northwestern State will take place at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
The following conference rematch against Texas A&M Commerce is slated for 11 a.m. Saturday.
