Student Speaks Out on Parking and Transportation Troubles

Elijah Noriega October 8, 2019

EDINBURG – At UTRGV, a student claims that she was given a ticket warning for something she didn’t do. She says this is the second incident involving her and parking services.

“I parked at the meters. I know the time it was 11:29. I paid for two hours, meaning at 1:29 I had to be out. It was barely 12:30 my event was over, and I go back to my car and I have a warning on there,” said Exercise Science major Gabriela Valdez.

Valdez also states she was accused of signing papers she did not sign.

“She says well you signed a form and I’m like I didn’t sign anything. She looks at me and goes oh, I accidentally put your ID in the system instead of the person behind you. I had just gone to get a visitor pass, and apparently, the person behind me wanted to report their permit as lost so she accidentally put my ID in the system, but the other person signed the form. They were able to cross match it,” she continued.

We reached out to UTRGV Parking and Transportation Services, for a statement about the situation.

Although they did not want to leave a comment, instead they directed us to the university’s spokesman.

“When it involves human error like this, we kind of rely on the student or whoever has been affected to bring that to our attention. We will be working with our service assistants, our parking attendants to make sure it doesn’t happen again,” said Assistant Vice President for Marketing and Communications Patrick Gonzalez.

Valdez says it’s a frustrating situation.

“I know I’m not the only one going through, but I’m pretty much the only one saying something about it.”

But she still encourages students to speak up and share their story whenever there’s a problem. She says Student Rights and Responsibilities were a big help.
