EDINBURG – UTRGV Baseball started the season with a three-day game series win against Southern Illinois.
The Vaqueros have been putting in their work since late August as they prepared for the season.
As the season begins, head coach Derek Matlock is looking forward to seeing the team’s hard work in action.
“Trying to compete for something that means a lot,” Matlock said. “These guys are putting in a lot of time and we just want to sit back and watch them.”
Matlock talks about this year’s schedule and how every game is serious.
“Everybody’s a matchup and we are nervous about everybody,” he said. “We got to respect everybody that’s always a big challenge playing the no conference games.”
Junior pitcher Wyatt Wiatrek returns for his second season and is ready to take the field with the Valley’s support.
“It’s everything,” Wiatrek said. “Especially South Texas baseball is really big here and just the support we get from the Valley. You know for us being a small division 1 school our fans really fill up this stadium and show us they are proud.”
Vaqueros are next to play on the road against Dallas Baptist University, at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Globe Life Field in Arlington.
