EDINBURG – The UTRGV Student Union will be hosting its inaugural Union Con. Christopher Stubbs, assistant director of Student Activities, said he hopes the Union Con will become a place of inclusivity for students with different interests around campus.
“We’re just really excited to have you guys, nerd out, be geeks, please. And, come have fun with us.” Stubbs said.
The UTRGV Student Union Instagram made a post with the full itinerary for both Edinburg and Brownsville days.
Some events included a D&D one shot hosted by RGV Young DSA, cosplay contest and parade hosted by UTRGV Student Activities, scrapbooking hosted by the UTRGV Drawing Club and fandom trivia.
While most of the activities are being hosted by student organizations and clubs, a few events are being held by non-UTRGV affiliated groups such as, lightsaber training by Team Tiger Martial Arts and a MAGIC: The Gathering and Pokémon Card Game tournament being held by Kaboom! Comics.
“We would like to engage with more of the campus and more of our students who we see, you know, doing these kind of more niche activities or these more arts-centered activities that we haven’t really brought out yet; that we haven’t represented here at the union,” Stubbs said. “I’m really hoping that this kind of breaks open a whole new community of those students here on campus.”
Stubbs encouraged students to come in costumes as long as the costumes are appropriate.
Union Con will be held on March 26 from noon to 5 p.m. at the Student Union in the Brownsville campus.
For the Edinburg campus, Union Con will be held on March 27, also from noon to 5 p.m. in the Student Union.
Stubbs said students looking to attend the event should bring student identification.
