EDINBURG – Earlier this year, three separate elevator malfunctions were reported on the Edinburg campus; two in Unity Hall and one in the Performing Arts Complex.
Matthew Moncus, Interim Director for Environmental Health Safety and Risk Management department, said he is aware of the incidents that occurred on campus.
Moncus said there is a required annual inspection, and the department works with the facilities department to inspect elevators frequently.
“So, whenever we see trends in-instance on campus, we work with that [facilities] department to try and figure out solutions,” he said. “So, working with our facilities teams we want to do preventative maintenance rather than just reactionary maintenance”
In an email sent to KVAQ-TV, Martin Ramirez, UTRGV Facilities director, said there are 50 elevators across the Edinburg and McAllen university buildings.
Ramirez stated, Elevated Facilities Services is a company that provides UTRGV with a technician who conducts inspections on a regular basis.
The director said the contractor addressed all three reported cases, focusing on resolving the issues and obtaining the necessary elevator parts.
Moncus explains what students can do in case they get stuck in an elevator.
“So, there is an emergency call button in the elevator so they can use that… contacts our police dispatch, and if they have cell phone service, they’re free to call our PD to respond to that as well,” he said.
