Freshman Worries Over Her Tuition Rates

Marisol Villarreal April 16, 2019

Edinburg- “He couldn’t put me as a U.S. Citizenship.. like .. I’m a citizen.. I was born here in Texas in McAllen. So when he tried it, the computer marked ‘error.’ So he used my other nationality.. Mexican,” said Jakquelin Soto, UTRGV Freshman.

She says that during the registration process with U-Central last fall, there was a lack of communication that lead to an increased tuition rate.

“So after doing…Having my first semester, fall, going in and out the U-Central because the loans — I had to ask more, I had to get a scholarship, I had to do so much things for it to cover it and in the end, it did not cover all of it,” she continued.

In Soto’s case, she says that she is a United States citizen, but not a resident.

UTRGV-TV tried reaching out to U-Central, but they were unavailable for comment at the time. However, according to the UTRGV website, tuition rates for non-residents are the highest.

For Soto, she says that although understanding how to pay off her tuition is stressful, she will continue to fight for attending the college she loves.
