BROWNSVILLE – The mural commissioned by the city of Brownsville was funded by the Musk Foundation and painted by Los Angeles artist, Teddy Kelly.
Although Kelly has worked on murals all over the world, some residents criticized the city for not hiring a local artist. Other residents are concerned for the gentrification of downtown and how it will eventually get too expensive for the people that live there.
However, there are some residents who like the artwork rather than the plain wall and do not think murals have to represent the city.
Brownsville Director of Community and Government Affairs, Ramiro Gonzalez said the old capital theater building just needed a pop of color.
“Most cities invite artist from around the world, so they come and do a mural. Not that it represents anything, but it does say BTX, that’s Brownsville, Texas,” Said Gonzalez.
“It gave life to a wall that had no life a week ago. Art is meant to be interpretive, some people like it, some people don’t like it, some people mas o menos, that’s what art is,” Said Gonzalez.
