UTRGV – The Environmental Awareness Club encouraged the university community to become active and make a change by celebrating the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.
When they learned about the outbreak of COVID-19, the club made the effort to move all of its events to a virtual format. The club offered online zoom meetings and Facebook lives for a span of 8 days. The impact of climate change, environmental justice, and sustainable agriculture were some of the many topics discussed in panel discussions, workshops and presentations.
“Climate change, climate destruction, climate catastrophe is bigger than us and it’s bigger than the pandemic, so it is important that we still bring awareness to global warming and so that’s why we found it important to still go online and do events and promote a sustainable lifestyle so that we can support ourselves in the future when disasters hit,” said Marisol Cervantes, president of the Environmental Awareness Club.
