Bakri

Nathaniel Puente October 30, 2018

Brownsville- On this edition of Music Craft, a Brownsville resident fuses several influences to play completely different genres of music. Our reporter Nathaniel Puente has more.

Hi, welcome to Music Craft where we see what the RGV music scene is up to. Today, I’ve traveled to the remote jungles of Brownsville, Texas here at UTRGV. Along the way from Hidalgo to Cameron County I ran into a musical artist who mixes two completely different styles of music. He’s a bassist in a death metal band and a rapper. His name is Bakri and here’s the story.

This is Joesph Bakri. He’s your typical extreme metalhead hyped on The Faceless. So, it’s no surprise that he’s a bassist in local metal bands Dythalla and Signs of Omnicide. It may be a surprise, though, that Bakri has a full-fledged rap project going as Bakri, where he writes, records, and produces all of the music. How does someone manage to focus on two completely different styles of music?

“The idea of having subgenres and genres in anything in society or in music is it’s a little old-school for me I feel like the modern age of music is more universal,” said Bakri.

Joseph joined his first metal band at 13 and jumped around different local groups he joined death Dythalla in 2014 and Signs of Omnicide in 2018. When Joseph joined a reggae band it prompted him to play various types of music. Bakri began in the summer of 2018 as Joseph took his musical career to new territories with his rap and hip-hop music produced entirely alone. Bakri has four songs out now including a music video for “Keep on Groovin” which was shot over a couple of months by Bakri.

“The video was about me playing with my cover about at the island what it’s like to be at the island and letting go of your fears just having fun,” said Bakri.
