Edinburg- Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf signed an anti-hazing bill named after Timothy Piazza, a 19-year-old student who passed away while pledging a fraternity at Penn State.
The Timothy J Piazza Anti-Hazing law has been passed by legislators a year after the engineering major passed away due to major head trauma and a lacerated spleen while pledging the Beta Theta pi fraternity and participating in hazing activities.
The anti-hazing law creates tiers for hazing such as hazing resulted in bodily injury, hazing resulted in death, organizational hazing and institutional hazing with consequences including felony charges, withholding diplomas, fines, academic penalties ranging from probation to expulsion and also grants students immunity from being prosecuted if they contact authorities.
I spoke to the Tau Kappa Epsilon New Member educator about the rules UTRGV has implemented to protect students from being hazed.
