Samara Flores EDINBURG – Moved residencies or missed a renewal certificate in the mail? It may be time to update your residential information with the county registrar.
According to Texas Secretary of State, over a million residents were placed on the suspense list because the county could not confirm their address.
Aiden Arevalo, Hidalgo and Cameron County Volunteer Deputy Registrar, said one detail may cause residents trouble at the polls.
“People, especially down here in the valley are very uninformed in my opinion, they’re very uninformed and they don’t often check things like their voter registration,” Arevalo said. “So, a lot of people are going to go to the ballot box in November expecting to vote and then they’re going to be turned away because they were suspended and they just weren’t made aware.”
Texas suspends voters each year, but the four counties in the valley have seen a decrease in suspended voters from March 2025 to March 2026.
Willacy County decreased 6.34%, Cameron County decreased 5.08%, Starr County decreased 4.46% and Hidalgo County with the least amount of decreased suspended voters at 4.22%.
The voter registration deadline for the Nov. 3 uniform elections is Oct. 5
