Fernanda Gonzalez October 25, 2024

BROWSNVILLE—Every 39 minutes a person in the U.S. dies in a drunk driving accident, that is according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving is an organization that has worked to end impaired driving, as well as to support victims of these crimes since 1980.

Despite having one location in the Rio Grande Valley, Maura Torres, MADD program specialist said MADD has two staff members in the Hidalgo and County areas which are a victim liaison and community liaison.

“Let’s say I was impacted by DWI, she [the victim liaison] would, and you know when we get impacted, we are not in the right state of mind, so what better way than having that person guide you, she’s an advocate,” Torres said.

She said the organization is trying to spread prevention.

“Because we are early on, we can bring, we can get ahead on make student aware the youth,” Torres said.

The Mothers Against Drunk Driving office in Edinburg is located at 4751 S. Jackson Rd.
