EDINBURG – The UTRGV House of Fashion performed its end-of-semester show, The Future of Fashion, on April 27 at the Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library.
With a focus on sustainability, the show took viewers through the past, present, and future of fashion to demonstrate how we can change our environment through what we wear.
House of Fashion President, Maria Regina, said that expressing oneself through sustainable fashion is the group’s main focus.
“Sustainable fashion is having the ability to take something that you no longer want and giving it that new left, that new spark,” said Regina, “It’s finding ways to, you know, continue to be sustainable and eco-friendly.”
To help gather clothing and material for the event, Regina teamed with the Remenace Vintage shop in McAllen.
Remenace owner Claudia Cantu discussed the process of sourcing clothing for the show.
“I helped source and look for the pieces that I thought she might be interested in,” said Cantu, “We love, you know, going to estate sales, garage sales, thrifting, we go to warehouses, lots of secondhand stores. Things like that.”
Regina added that The House of Fashion encourages others to pursue sustainable fashion practices and take steps to save the planet one garment time.
