Edinburg- The History of La Sal Del Rey dates back to the late 1720’s, when it was first added to Spanish Maps.
UTRGV Community Historical Archaeology Project with Schools Program Director, Roseann Bacha-Garza says that the lake is a valuable natural resource to the Rio Grande Valley.
“So the salt has been mined there by Native American people’s for many thousands of years prior to the Spaniards arrival,” says Bacha-Garza.
“Mining officially stopped at La Sal Del Rey around 1930.” she says.
La Sal Del Rey is located North of Edinburg on Highway 186.
