Mission- “They want to drain our economy of all our money,” said Ron English. “So now we can’t have solar panels. Now we can’t have schools. Now we can’t have healthcare because we’re going to have a big monstrosity concrete wall that’s useless and it’s across the border.”
“So now I’m actually drawn into it, like everybody else.”
The artist visited UTRGV’s School of Art to talk about his latest project, a Welcome Wall.
The wall is 2,000 feet long, 15 feet high and features images highlighting the xenophobia and racism he says President Donald Trump’s wall truly represents.
English began his career as a street artist in the 1980s and has painted on a portion of the existing United States-Mexico barrier, as well as the Berlin Wall.
“My idea was to kinda do something that kinda served a different purpose besides the other wall, something that is more of a public bulletin board where people can come and express their ideas of what they think about the wall,” said English.
Once the Welcome Wall is taken down, the individual art will be auctioned off to benefit the National Butterfly Center.
