EDINBURG – With the UTRGV Women’s Golf’s first tournament of the season complete, and after crowning themselves as champions last season . . . is the team ready for another challenge?
The reigning Southland Conference champions started the season at the “Bear Brawl” on Monday, hosted by the University of Northern Colorado at the Greeley Country Club.
The women’s golf team finished the tournament tied for second place.
Puthita Khuanrudee, UTRGV Golf special assistant, said the team is putting in the work for the season.
“We’ve been working really hard on a bunch of different [shots],” she said. “Which play is the one that we’re currently focusing on since we’re going off to Colorado, and we know we’re going to play a little shorter than what it is.”
Khuanrudee said the tough opponents will be a great test to see where they stand in the conference.
Preston Saiz, senior golf player, shares her goals for this new 2026-2027 season.
“I guess just the main goal overall with golf, lowering that scoring average,” Saiz said.
The senior added that she would like the team to win the conference once more.
“It means a lot,” she said. “I think we all felt really good coming back and we’re just really excited to hopefully do it again.” Khuanrudee said she is excited to see the team get better every day as they take on new challenges.
The Vaqueros’ next outing will be “Lady Clerico”, hosted by Oral Roberts from Sept. 14-15 at the Hillcrest Country Club in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
