Women’s Basketball preparing for ‘great competition’

Desiree Villanueva November 14, 2024

EDINBURG– With the season nearing, the Vaqueros are getting ready to leave their mark in the conference play.

The UTRGV Vaqueros Women’s Basketball team will kick off their 2024-2025 season facing the University of Houston, a formidable Big 12 opponent.

The UTRGV Vaqueros Women’s Basketball team features eight returning players and eight new recruits. This mix of experienced athletes and new transfers is expected to enhance the team’s overall strength and chemistry as they head into the new season.

UTRGV Women’s Basketball head coach Lane Lord said the new freshmen players are going to have the chance to play in a great competition.

“The non-conference games help them prepare throughout the season for those conference games,” Lord said. “What non-conference does for us is it challenges us it exposes our weakness that we need to get ready to work on for conference we want to be playing our best basketball when we get to the Southland Conference for sure.”

UTRGV claimed its first win over a power conference team since 2003 with a victory against the University of Houston last Tuesday.

The Vaqueros lost against Oral Roberts University, last Tuesday in a 65-58 game.
