CAMERON COUNTY – New buildings and renovations are expected to expand UTRGV after two items presented by the university were passed in a UT Board of Regents Meeting on Feb. 18 and 19.
“What this approval does is that it allows us to move forward with upgrades to existing facilities,” said Patrick Gonzales, vice president for University Marketing and Communications.
Gonzales said construction on both projects will start in May and conclude in August.
For Brownsville’s campus, new plans for engineering facilities have been made due to the end of its lease this year for its current location at Texas Southmost College.
“It’s all about expanding opportunities for students by renovating and adding new buildings,” Gonzales added.
For Harlingen, an expansion of the Health Affairs Building will introduce an occupational therapy program to the campus.
With new installations, students will be able to join the program along with new equipment.
Regarding a replacement for UTRGV’s faculty senate, Gonzales said there are currently no updates.
He also added he is unsure if the topic will be covered in a future UT System Board of Regents meeting.
