Julia Guerrero EDINBURG- The women’s basketball team has an opportunity to add some wins to its record with a pair of home games this week. Before its 75-55 loss to California Baptist last Thursday, the Vaqueros picked up back-to-back wins a few weeks ago after early season struggles.
After starting the season with an 11-game losing streak, the women’s basketball team has now won three of its last five games.
Head Coach Lane Lord said lack of depth and injuries contributed to the rocky start of the season.
Lord said players stepping up in their roles helps them continue to have a positive mindset as the season progresses.
“When you lose so many close games, it could go one or two ways and they kept a positive attitude,” Lord said. “They continue to work hard every day in practice and now we’re starting to see some benefits from that.”
Freshman Guard Jayda Holiman said the team had a rough beginning but continued being motivated and worked on defensive skills.
Holiman said ball movement and communication were key to help the team succeed in their win against UT Arlington, who stands as number four in the Western Athletic Conference.
“We just got together, you know we said we can’t stop, we got to pick it up and that’s what we did,” Holiman said. “We got in the practice and just kept going. You know that’s all that really matters. You know you can’t ever look back at the past that happened. Looking forward always.”
The vaqueros will take on the Utah Tech Trailblazers at noon Thursday and the southern Utah thunderbirds at 2 p.m. Saturday. Both games will take place in the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
