EDINBURG – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Women’s Volleyball team played at the UTRGV Tournament where they won all nine of their sets.
The volleyball team achieved a new record of ten wins in a row setting a 10-1 program record.
“This isn’t something that happened overnight, and it didn’t happen with this group. A big chunk of this group was here last year and got this rolling.,” said Vaqueros Volleyball Head Coach, Todd Lowery. “Over a year ago they came in and bought into something, they bought into the team concept and being unselfish and they worked really hard in the summer and now we are reaping the benefits of all those things.”
Senior Outside Hitter, Sarah Cruz had a big tournament receiving the UTRGV All-Tournament Team award as she averaged 4.11 kills, 1.67 digs, 0.33 blocks, and 0.33 aces per set. Cruz shares that one of her ultimate goals is to become the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year as it is her final year as a senior.
Cruz also adds she looks forward to playing against Utah Valley as they have been the reigning champs for the past two years at the Western Athletic Conference Tournament.
The Vaqueros went on the road to compete at the Texas Tech’s Red Raider Classic in Lubbock, where they faced Oral Roberts University before facing Southern Methodist University on Friday. Details on the tournament can be consulted at GOUTRGV.COM.
