EDINBURG – Guadalupe Salinas is a mass communications senior with two-year-old twins Julius and Junius. Homework and playtime become challenging tasks along various responsibilities in parenting.
Salinas said that before she was a student at UTRGV she had been working in retail for 12 years but decided to quit and go back to school for a bachelor’s degree after her children’s birth.
“Okay, what can I do to make my kids life easier in the long run,” Salinas said. “Which is the reason why I was like, I need to go back to school and finish my bachelor’s because I can’t just be working like retail jobs and not be happy.”
UTRGV helps student-parents through its Student Accessibility Services where individuals can request early registration for courses, attain free daycare for their children and counseling services for mental health support.
Salinas also commented that the Student-Parent Organization helped her in her journey; surrounded by other parents in similar situations on campus. She then gave advice to mothers who are currently struggling.
“Even when days get hard its temporary,” she said. “You know feeling tired, feeling pain whatever it is its temporary you just have to look at the brighter side of things.”
