Ian Juarez EDINBURG – Nearly one year after the assassination of right-wing political activist Charlie Kirk, one UTRGV student organization is planning a vigil in his honor.
On Sept. 10, 2025, Kirk was shot and killed during his American Comeback Tour at Utah Valley University.
A branch of Turning Point USA at UTRGV, a political organization which Kirk co-founded, hosted a candlelight vigil two days after the assassination.
Alexis Uscanga, TP USA UTRGV president, said the organization is working on hosting a vigil just like the one they held last year.
“We didn’t expect the crowd of people, but we appreciated the support of the community,” Uscanga said. “We’re still grieving right after it’s been a year. Something that is still very tragic to this day. And we do want to honor him and the capacity that we can.”
Ryan Ibarra, mechanical engineering freshman, claimed while he didn’t look up to Kirk he admired how he “spoke his mind.”
“How does someone just get shot because of just speaking their own mind,” Ibarra said. “I hope people do speak out like he did, but like to a certain extent”
When asked about the potential upcoming event, several students on campus who wished to remain anonymous said things such as:
“They’re acting like he was a god.”
“It’s going to cost conflict because a lot of people definitely did not agree with what he was saying.”
As of Sept. 8, Turning Point USA at UTRGV has not posted any details regarding any upcoming event.
