UTRGV Student Calls for Computer Technology Awareness

Neida Alcantar November 13, 2018

Edinburg-  “If everyone should be able to take a stance in making a difference, the world would be a better place.”

At first glance Ghana and UTRGV don’t seem to have much in common, but at least one virtual link ties these two places together.

A UTRGV student has started up his own non-profit organization based in his home country, Ghana.

Yaw Sam co-founded SPREADiT (spread-I-T) a year ago in October with the purpose of reducing computer illiteracy in developing countries, starting with Ghanaian elementary schools.

“What we do is we go out there and go to schools in deprived communities that don’t have access to computers. Most of them haven’t seen  what a computer looks like before. A lot of kids do not have access to these resources, and do not end up pursuing higher education because they don’t have the urge to do it,” said Yaw Sam.

As of right now, the organization’s aim is to mentor the students, but Sam is already working on future plans, starting with a book.

“We’re working on two different products, the first product is a book that would help these kids be able to learn effectively. The next one is a tablet to be able to help them get access to an alternative way of having a laptop instead of having to get these expensive items,” said Sam.
