BROWNSVILLE – The UTRGV Running Club expanded its track to the Brownsville campus last December.
Chapter President, Leslie Ortiz, said its main goal for the year is to surpass 260 members.
“Our goal is to surpass 260 club members by the end of this year,” Ortiz said. “So, we can be the club with the most members in UTRGV.”
The Running Club welcomes any individual with any level of experience.
Running Club Member, Javier Torres spoke about his experience in the club.
“We’ll make sure you get comfortable, you know, like, start talking to each other, then, like, we talk about what goals you want to do,” Torres said. “What you can do to lose weight, or you’re trying to, like, just become a fast runner.”
He said each of their meets starts with a lot stretching.
“We stretch, and we just do, like, warm up lap and then from there, we stretch again to, you know, avoid injuries,” Torres said. “And then we do our mile, and a half run.”
Ortiz encourages members to run at their own pace.
“We encourage for the members to run at anything they feel comfortable in that works best for them,” Ortiz said. “Sometimes it’s running at their own pace or having a partner that keeps them accountable; but usually, the flexibility yet consistency is what we encourage.”
The Running Club meets from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays in front of the Life and Health Science Building on the Brownsville Campus. The Edinburg group meets at the same time and days at the Edinburg University Recreation Center.
