UTRGV Provides Active Shooter Drills

utrgvtv February 20, 2020

EDINBURG – We spoke to UT Police Chief, Raul Munguia last Friday. He says the UT Police Department performs Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events, or “CRASE” exercises, right here at UTRGV.

The drills are available to teach students, faculty and staff about what to do if an active shooter is on campus.

Those exercises take place every all year round – especially during the winter break – upon request.

Chief Munguia says the drills for active shooters are mandated.

“Things that you can do to protect yourself, but one of the things…the next thing is just trying to limit access to you and anyone else that’s in the room with you. The first we would say is that, you know, you lock the doors and turn off the lights. If you need to barricade the doors, you know, push furniture up on it make it more difficult to get to you cause the main goal here is for you to buy yourself just a couple of minutes,” said Raul Munguia.

Chief Munguia says the active shooter drill took place on the Edinburg campus last year – this year – the drill took place in Brownsville.

To register for a CRASE drill, you can contact the UT Police at (956) 882-7777.
