UTRGV Probation Status Update

Marisol Villarreal January 21, 2019

UTRGV- UTRGV is no longer on academic probation.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) Board of Trustees ensures that colleges located on the southern part of the United States meet certain standards and guidelines.

UTRGV is one of those colleges that the commission has to observe.

With the university’s unique transformation between UTPA, UTB and TSC, SACSCOC placed UTRGV on academic probation in 2017.

Patrick Gonzales, the Associate Vice President for University Marketing and Communications, takes us back to the first time UTRGV was placed under probationary status.

“SACSCOC did have some concerns and we addressed those concerns, and at the 2017 annual board meeting for SACSCOC they agreed that the concerns they had were addressed,” said Gonzales.

Gonzales said that students were not affected during the observation period.

Towards the end of 2017 the issues were addressed concerning the transition, but SACSCOC pushed for 1 more year in order for UTRGV to have a “clean, state audit.”

“We were able to provide a clean financial audit to SACSCOC in 2018. Unfortunately we had to wait until their annual board meeting which occurs every December,”Gonzales continued.

Gonzales said that this is a learning experience for UTRGV. He is also confident that UTRGV won’t be finding themselves in this situation ever again.
