BROWNSVILLE – History was made under the stadium lights of Veterans Memorial High School as the UTRGV Vaqueros Football Team took the field for its inaugural spring game. It was a night full of energy, excitement and a glimpse into the future for the university’s newest athletic program.
The stands were packed with 3,562 fans who came out to witness the historic event. Divided into two teams , Orange and White, the players showcased their talent and hard work from spring training.
Atzel Chavez Jr., freshman quarterback, led the White Team to a 17-5 victory, scoring the game’s first touchdown in the second quarter. On the Orange side, Julian Melucci, redshirt freshman kicker, responded with his team’s first points, keeping the crowd on edge.
The night was about more than just football. The UTRGV Spirit Program and Marching Band amped up the halftime show with performances, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Travis Bush, UTRGV football head coach, beamed with pride as he watched his team compete.
“It’s been a fun spring, but finishing up here in Brownsville with the crowd, the band, and the cheerleaders really gave it a real game atmosphere,” Bush said. “We’re really proud of the guys, splitting up into two teams and balancing out the talent.”
Chavez also shared his excitement after the game.
“The atmosphere was great,” Chavez said. “The White team came in with energy. I got everyone hyped in the locker room. We were mentally prepared and locked in. It was really fun to play.”
The spring game not only marked a milestone for the program but also signaled the close of spring training. With momentum building, the Vaqueros now set their sights on the fall season opener, scheduled for Aug. 30 against Sul Ross State; the first official game for UTRGV football.
