RIO GRANDE VALLEY – UTRGV’s Library department has showcased its various resources on women’s history online for Women’s History Month this March.
Raquel Estrada, acquisitions and collection development librarian, said the university library staff have been working to create the digital showcases throughout the years.
These showcases, available online, feature library resources, such as articles, databases and more, focusing on women.
Estrada explained what the UTRGV community can expect to see in this year’s work.
“I’m working on a poster on government documents,” Estrada said. “So, I think with that particular collection, they are government resources. So, they won’t just be available to UTRGV community, they’ll be available to just anyone, you know, or community at large.”
Estrada added, the sharing of the library’s resources helps students not only learn about its online content but also teaches students a bit of women’s history.
“There’s just so much, information, you know, you get to learn, you know, past experiences from, you know, the women that came before us,” Estrada said.
According to the University Library, before 2023, book displays were created during March to highlight the works available on campus libraries.
With fewer students present after the pandemic, the library team decided to move to digital posters with accessible links to not only written articles, but also short films and documentaries.
Brizeida Ramos, marketing junior, said this project is a great way to share university resources that can inspire female students.
“I think that’s just a great way to really put that out there and just empower our women here on campus,” Ramos said. “That they can do things and that there’s so much inspiration out there for us to look up to.”
Preston Saiz, accounting junior, said she shares the feeling of empowerment this initiative brings.
“I think it’s really, like, empowering as a woman, Saiz said.” “I think it’s really important just to stick up for each other, that more information is spread. Just be proud of it.”
The University Library will host a screening of the film “Women In Motion” at 1 p.m. on March, Friday 13 on the Brownsville campus in BLIBR room 2.206. The film will be available for free through the online platform Kanopy.
