EDINBURG – As KVAQ-TV reported last week, a new hike-and-bike trail is under construction on the Edinburg campus and it is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
Assistant Vice President for Strategic Planning Gerardo Rodriguez said the new hike-and-bike trail will be more than 8,000 feet long and nine to ten feet wide.
Rodriguez explained that the UTRGV Brownsville campus started with its own hike-and-bike trail three years ago. However, the project has not finished due to the university waiting for ownership of some of the land that is currently managed by the International Boundary and Water Commission.
“Because the campus has some resacas, some of those water areas are owned by IBWC and but there’s been some informal agreements that may allow UTRGV to take ownership of some of those properties,” Rodriguez said.
He also elaborated on how the idea for the hike-and-bike trail came to life.
“So, that’s where the idea started that we can create a better walkway on the outside of the covered walkway that can enable all the different devices mobile devices to get around and keep them off the covered walkway,” Rodriguez said.
He said the trail is a combination of both new and pre-existing sidewalks that connect the campus all the way around it.
The scheduled day of completion for the hike-and-bike trail in Edinburg is Dec. 15.
