Students Hold March in Support of DACA

Verilu Infante November 12, 2019

EDINBURG – “Undocumented!” “Here to stay!” “Undocumented!” “Here to stay!” chanted the group of individuals marching across campus.

Back in 2017 President Donald Trump ordered an end to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, also known as DACA.

Students at UTRGV held a walkout in protest and urged UTRGV administration to create a DREAM Center.

As of today November 12, 2019, the Supreme Court has begun hearing oral arguments regarding the program which will determine the fate of 700,000 DACA recipients in the nation.

At approximately 12 p.m. close to 30 individuals took to the Bronc Trail and marched throughout the campus to show their support of DACA and promote solidarity for undocumented individuals.

Organizing the march was student and DACA recipient Araceli Gallegos.

Gallegos states the reason behind holding the march is because she is a DREAMER, and her family members are DREAMERS as well.

“I wanna show them support and I want people to support me because DACA is a big movement, that’s the reason why I am here. I was really happy to see a lot of people join in because we are a community and with more people involved, we’re more powerful, we’ll get stronger. It’s growing bigger and it’s gonna grow bigger and bigger,” said Gallegos.

The Supreme Court has until June 2020 to make a final decision.
