EDINBURG — Last Wednesday, the 2025-2026 SGA executive officers and senators took their oath of office where the President Elect Juan Espinoza shared his plans for their upcoming term.
“Our goal is to talk more with these department heads,” Espinoza said. “And especially than the ones of College of Science and Math, because they’re the ones that there’s a lot of PLTL courses in there and hopefully when we talk to them, we can either come to a sort of compromise or find improvements to improve the program. ”
Espinoza said one of his plans for UTRGV students includes modifying the peer-lead team learning program.
“I think that there can be a lot of things to improve in PLTL,” he said. “And I think a lot of students, when they hear optional, they think it’s just going to get rid of. Our main goal and our main policy is to make it optional, depending on the grade of the student. Obviously, that, we would have to work with the colleges to see whether they want it to be a B or in A, but that’s our ideal situation.”
SGA External Vice President-Elect Ian Alfaro said diversity and unity played a major role in his team’s success during the election.
“Everyone in my team that when we ran for campaign, we’re all very diverse,” Alfaro said. “We all had hearts and that really came through in the end. All our teams came from different, whether it was different, different majors, different studies, whatever it was, we had that diversity and we all had the same goal in mind and the same heart. So, that really came through in the end.”
English junior Adalee Garza said she looks forward to the plans the 2025-2026 SGA has for UTRGV student organizations.
“I hear they’re going to bring a lot of opportunities for the clubs that are involved and I’m looking forward to seeing how the changes a lot of the funding for it,” Garza said.
The new executive officers and senators will officially take office May 5.
