Student Complains on Campus Inequality

Marisol Villarreal February 5, 2019

Brownsville- The conversation began with a popular Facebook group that is intended for students.

One specific post brought up multiple concerns from students who attend the Brownsville campus.

A beautiful campus, architecturally pleasing to the eye.

What used to be solely “UTB,” is now “UTRGV.”

For one student, the commute from Brownsville to Edinburg isn’t always easy.

“My minor is theatre and it’s only over there so I have to travel between both campuses,” said Alberto Ovalle Jr., a Computer Engineering major.

Reporter – “And does this campus have a theater or..?”

“No. Nothing. All the classes are over there.”

Alberto Ovalle Jr. was one of many students to voice his opinions on the student Facebook post.

Many Brownsville students were concerned with the lack of school spirit between both Edinburg and Brownsville campuses.

“We have done different kinds of programming based on feedback to be able to meet the needs, desires or wants or interests of students,” said Rebecca Gadson.

Rebecca Gadson is the Dean of Students and Vice President for Student Life. She said that she understands the feeling of Brownsville and Edinburg not being together.

Though her department does not deal directly with the data, she said that UTRGV administrators are working on course scheduling.
