Sportscast – UTRGV Athletics 2024 season recap

Desiree Villanueva December 3, 2024

EDINBURG– As spring 2025 approaches, some teams will be looking back to assess their fall performances, while others will be preparing for the seasons ahead.

The UTRGV volleyball team fell 3-1 to the Incarnate Word (UIW) Cardinals in the quarterfinals of the Southland Tournament at Southeaster’s University Center.

The UTRGV cross country teams wrapped up their seasons at the NCAA South Central Regional Championship on November 15, with the men finishing 24th out of 26 teams and the women placing 22nd out of 29.

The men’s soccer team concluded its season with an overall record of 4-7-5 and did not qualify for the Western Athletic Conference Tournament.

On the women’s side, the Vaqueros made it to the Southland Tournament but were defeated by Stephen F. Austin in the first round.

The tennis teams competed in several tournaments throughout the fall, with their seasons culminating in events held in Houston and Louisiana.

In men’s tennis, redshirt junior Sam Whitehead and sophomore Ivo Isqueiro reached the doubles semifinals of the SLC Fall Tournament on October 26 in Louisiana. The pair were defeated 6-0, 6-4 by the top-seeded duo of Pablo Perez Ramos and Wil Jenkins from the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

The women’s tennis team closed out its season with three victories on day three of the Rice Invitational on November 10th in Houston. Sophomore Madeleine Joffe, freshman Mariia Bakhtina, and sophomore Rhea Makesar all earned wins to wrap up the fall schedule.

Golf experienced success as they wrapped up their fall schedules, with strong performances across various tournaments and individual achievements.

Senior Juan Luis de Bethencourt Duque claimed first place at the Men’s Golf Monterrey Collegiate Classic on October 26, finishing 13 under par over three rounds. UTRGV finished fifth in the tournament.

The women’s golf team finished out its fall schedule with a 3-2 victory over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on October 25 in McAllen.

As UTRGV Athletics transitions into the spring season, several exciting events and competitions are on the horizon across multiple sports.

The men’s and women’s basketball teams will continue their seasons this week, with both squads set to face Stephen F. Austin in their first conference games of the season. The men will play at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, followed by the women at 2 p.m. on Saturday, both games taking place at home.

UTRGV baseball will open its season against Southern Illinois University on February 14 at home.
