Philosophy Club Hosts Donation Drive for Asylum-Seekers

Jose Guerrero November 26, 2019

BROWNSVILLE – “For the asylum-seekers, they’ve been put in an impossible situation, you know we should help out and seek to assist.”

This is Dr. Bradley Warfield, lecturer in Philosophy and the man behind the UTRGV Philosophy Club’s donation drive to help asylum-seekers in need.

For several months, hundreds of asylum-seekers have been living in harsh conditions on the Mexico side of the Cameron County International Gateway Bridge.

Dr. Warfield tells us why he reached out to the UTRGV Philosophy Club about the asylum-seeker situation.

“There just is in really destitute conditions, and I thought it would be a good idea to try to draw on the resources of the wonderful UTRGV community, so I brought it to the attention of the philosophy club. There not exactly in the best conditions, so we just wanted to help give something to facilitate their stay. Give a little bit, if we can, why not?” said Warfield.

Supplies ranging from hygiene products to non-perishable food can be donated.

“The supplies will be going directly to Team Brownsville, who then distributes them to the asylum-seekers. They take supplies across the border, in wagons and carts. However much it can alleviate suffering for the moment is wonderful,” he continued.

On the Brownsville campus, donation boxes are located in the library, advising center, BMAIN 1.413 and on the 3rd floor of BMSLC building, on the Edinburg Campus a donation box is located in Liberal Arts Building
South in the Philosophy Department. The donation boxes will continue being in the same location for the spring, and future semesters.

So remember if you happen to pass by any of these boxes feel free to donate anything you can, as any donation helps.
