New Dining Features at Edinburg Campus

Verilu Infante September 24, 2019

UTRGV – Sodexo, UTRGV’s dining service, has implemented new features as well as new expansions on campus this semester.

In the Student Union, Chick-fil-A received new products as well as an updated look.

Sodexo has also taken healthier approaches with the food on campus. From hosting events with the UREC such as Motivation Monday and Wellness Wednesdays to implementing plant-forward initiatives with a plant based station in the campus dining hall.

“I think it’s pretty good. There’s many people switching to that lifestyle and I feel like not having them feel excluded is good for the school and for the students themselves. They don’t have to feel like “Oh man, I have to bring my food and they don’t have to worry because now they have their options, I think that’s really cool,” says Edinburg student Justin Hernandez.

Unfortunately, most of these features are limited to the Edinburg campus.

“It would be fair, cause I know a part of us can take that here, to give students more options that are healthier. Usually when we’re in a rush for class and what not we just get what we can get, so having healthier options for most of us would help out a lot,” says Brownsville student Julio Hernandez.

Though we aren’t seeing any changes to the Brownsville Student Union this semester, Registered Dietitian and Sodexo Marketing Coordinator Susie Gonzales reassures that the campus, though small, will be constantly changing over time for the convenience of its students and staff.

“We are always trying to look for something convenient for our students and staff. We understand that the campus is a bit smaller space wise so that will always be ever changing and we’ll always be analyzing that in Brownsville,” says Gonzales.

She even mentioned a new service for the Brownsville campus Sodexo hopes to have available in spring of 2020.

“We are bringing a convenience service, it’s called On the Spot. As of right now I do not have a tentative date of opening, but we are hoping to have it in place by spring of 2020. And so that’s like a vending machine that our simply to go products will be in, and it’s going to be located inside of the new building on the Brownsville campus,” she continued.
