Gabriela Sandoval EDINBURG – Hidalgo County Criminal District Attorney’s Office, High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area and Behavioral Health Solutions of South Texas partnered together to bring five free Narcan vending machines to Hidalgo County.
According to Dr. Iván Meléndez, Hidalgo County Health Authority and Chief Physician, in the first week of dispensing this life-saving medicine through these vending machines, the number of patients in the emergency rooms have gone from 30 patients to only eight in the past year.
“Mathematically and scientifically, we have proven over, and over, and over that these programs do not encourage the utilization of drugs,” Dr. Meléndez said. And in fact, the numbers do not increase by having these programs available.”
