Edinburg- On January 25, President Donald Trump announced a temporary deal to reopen the government for three-weeks. This comes after more than 800,000 federal employees have missed two full paychecks.
One of the agencies impacted was U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Although the shutdown affected him and his home, Jason Montemayor, a CBP supervisor, said he is grateful for the support he and others have received from the community.
“We’re just really thankful to all the businesses and community members and the citizens,” said Montemayor. “It shows what a tight-knit community we are in the RGV.”
Montemayor recently received his missed paychecks, but he fears what further measures he would have to take if the government were to be shut down again after the three weeks.
“This two week shutdown definitely taught us some lessons on how we need to put a little more money away,” said Montemayor. “We’re just barely catching up on our bills and for it to happen again would be really difficult.”
