Former member of congress advocates for UTRGV students to vote

Fernanda Gonzalez October 8, 2024

BROWNSVILLE — Last Tuesday, Former Congresswoman and Candidate for the 34TH district Mayra Flores visited the UTRGV Brownsville campus to encourage students to vote.

Flores is primarily vocal about is bringing economic opportunities to South Texas and helping people accomplish the American Dream.

She said young voters probably want to leave this decision to adults, but it should not be the case.

“I want [the] youth to have that choice,” she said. “Those decisions, where you can move, but if you want to stay, you can, and those opportunities are here, and I feel we lack those economic opportunities.”

Flores said the American Dream is dying. She said it is more difficult for the younger generations to purchase a home than in previous years.

“So, it’s a lot easier for us [adults] to purchase a home, the interest rates were very low, the cost of homes was also very low,” Flores said.

Another issue Flores says she plans to improve is the legal process for immigrants.

Flores said the economic opportunities should be enough to drive voters to the polls on Nov. 5.

Early voting starts Oct. 21 and ends Nov. 1.
